[George is in the infirmary. He looks slightly green around the gills (not that he has gills), but otherwise well.]

That was quite unpleasant. I don't believe I like myself when I am angry.

And I hope I didn't put anyone out too much, particularly you, Captain Angua. And Dick: I do of course trust you completely with any of my bodily fluids.

[George looks up from his comm.]

Oh, Detective! I'm afraid I had a bit of an accident, was transformed into some sort of huge green rampaging creature, and then my heart gave out on me. Luckily it's all a bit of a blur now.

[Hoffman stares at him. and stares. and.]

huge green rage monster. Sounds like something out of Marvel Comics. [The name escapes him though. Good lord. He moves closer to the bed.]

How long are you laid up for? Can I get you anything?

Comics?

[George asks, blankly.]

I hope to be up and about by tomorrow. But until then, some reading material wouldn't go amiss.

[Hoffman considers this for a moment and realizes, point blank that he never took the time to learn about George's world-while George was manfully doing his best to keep up with theirs.

He sat down a moment, studied the other man before nodding.] ...do you have any particular requests? Or can I pick and chose.

Something a bit uplifting might be best.

Gimme about...twenty minutes.

[Hoffman gets up to leave-looks back and he's gone to the library. When he returns, he's got a stack of plastic-wrapped flimsy books. He passes them over to George. Detective Comics. Circa 1939-1940]

...This is a comic book. It's something kids tend to read-and a lot of adults. [He passes over the stack] this guy's Batman. He's...

When he was a kid he was my favorite. He was a normal guy who didn't let anything bug him-plus he was a genius billionare playboy philanthropist who knew kung fu and a bunch of other stuff.

There's some monsters too. Killer Croc but he comes later.

[How to segue into meeting Batman in the early days of the barge. He's not sure. He sits back.] I mean there's a year's worth there.

[George examines the comics.]

It's like Punch, then?

Punch?

Yes, it's a cartoon publication.

Never heard of it. [He shifts] Batman came out in the 30's though, so it might be way earlier.

I assume you don't mean the 1830's.

[Hoffman grins at that] No, 1930s. See? He gets a utility belt and everything. He was the wrold's greatest detective.

[George lights up at that.]

Really? What were his methods?

Forensics mostly. Beating up the bad guys-he lived in Gotham City and the thing was...well...is that a lot of the criminals he fought in Gotham were... Kind of silly.

All the same though, he was fighting for truth and justice. His parents were killed when he was a kid and he wanted to become a hero to avenge them. To declare a war on crime.

He used science and then he used his utility belt-lot like our base belts to get criminals. His thing though was that he never used a gun.

He always gave even the craziest guys a fair shake.

[George is now eagerly flipping through the pages.]

So he's a private detective. He sounds quite thrilling.

[He nods] He was a millionare. Billionare really. He had a special car and worked closely with the police. There were movies about the guy too but...

[He shrugs] These are all the ones I have. My faster father was a bit of a dick but he let me keep them. My mom gave them to me.

Goodness, just think of all of the crime fighting apparatuses he could afford...

[George slows his flipping.]

I'll be sure to be quite careful with them, Detective. How did you manage in this port?

[He smiles] I fufilled a childhood dream and worked with the Gotham Police Department...as a cop. Second time I've fallen overboard for this sort of thing.

...It was good to be a cop again, even if I was some other guy clinging helplessly to the idea Batman would come back and that his wife and kid were okay.

Hope is never a helpless idea.

No, he believed that.

[Hoffman looks a little sad] Hope his wife and kid made it out before things went bad. Working with Gotham PD though...that was something.

Yes. I too worked for the department for a matter of hours.

You still haven't told me how you ended up here. [Hoffman's voice is very quiet. If shit happened, bad things are going to happen. :| ]

Of course. I was sent to investigate a disturbance, and got into a scuffle with one of the suspects. While blocking one of his blows, my hand was punctured by some sort of needle he had on him. I believe that's how I was exposed to the substance which transformed me.

I'm afraid it gets a bit hazy after that, but I do know I was under the assumption that Dick meant to steal my blood for nefarious means, and that I dog-napped Captain Angua.

And then I died.

[Ah. Death.]

...How'd you feel? ...about..

[And he hates himself because he can't remember if this is the first time George has death-tolled or not.]

Dognapping.

Yes. I'm not proud.

I remember feeling afraid.
