19centconstable: (Like the Mounties we always get our man.)

Case #1: Video

[The video screen is navy blue and slightly blurry. From off-screen a man speaks. He has an accent which, if you are familiar with such things, is easily identifiable as being from Newfoundland. If you are not so in the know, you may think it is Irish. Or British. Or fake. He declares:]

I...believe this device and I have reached an understanding...

[The expanse of navy moves back. You have been looking at a close up of the man's policeman uniform. Now it is visible from neck to about mid-thigh in all its old-fashioned, high-collared, many buttoned glory. Because while the device and George may have come to an understanding, George does not understand how to frame a shot.]

Well. I-...oh.

[As a sort of after thought, he reaches up out of frame. When his hands appear again they are holding his navy blue custodian helmet, which has a silver colored maple leaf on the front. He rests the helmet against his hip.]

I'm Constable George Crabtree, Toronto Constabulary, station #4, and I'm very pleased to be here and meet all of you. ...Although I suppose I haven't done that yet. But I'm sure I'll be pleased when I do!

I've seen an airship before, but I've never been on one...that I can remember. But it's really an experience; much smoother than being on a boat. I don't get seasick myself, but I have an aunt who can't stomach travel like that in the slightest. Just.

[Vomit-y hand motion.]

All over.

Anyway. I'm very impressed by this whole business! This "thingy" here.

[He shakes the communicator.]

But! Especially-

[And then everything is a blur as George, communicator in hand, is moving through his room. When he stops, you are greeted with a lovely shot of: a toilet. The sort with a wall mounted tank and pull chain. Then George turns the camera back on himself, and manages to actually aim it at his excitedly grinning face. He hooks a thumb in the toilet's direction.]

Now that's fantastic! Did everybody get one?

[Tony accidentally bumped his video on. He's just staring at the guy who's so baffled by the toilet. He probably wouldn't have paid attention, but the familiar maple leaf caught his eye. When he notices the red light, he adds in a hurried, Canadian voice,] Yeah, all wardens get a toilet. Inmates share one.

[After all, it would make things more awkward if he just stared and then turned his video back off.]

[Staring is a bit rude, and it's the sort of thing which makes George uncomfortable. Particularly if it's an inanimate object which is doing the staring. The snakes on that "Snakes and Ladders" game have no manners whatsoever. But Tony seems like a polite, and fully animate young man, and in addition he has set off George's Cana-dar.]

That still seems very generous to me. Where are you from? If you don't mind me asking.

Toronto. [Tony was now fully animate, his earlier staring being the result of not knowing his video was on.] And 2006 is when I'm from.

2006. My goodness. I can't event imagine what things must be like by then. ...There aren't any sorts of races of haired creatures that live underground and hunt you for their dinner, are there?

Not that I know of. [Yet the way he says this implies that he believes that there could be, he just doesn't know that there are.] And all the stuff that's around that's like that was always around. We have toilets in every house, though.

I don't know: I think it was Mr. Wells' belief that we turned into that. Unless we're talking about something else. Do you mean ghosts and such? Because that is in a way true, but in another way: they were at one time living people. Although the lad Jimmy has told me about...well it's called a Wendigo, and it causes cannibalism, and even though it is a spirit, I don't believe it was ever a person.

Ghosts, vampires, werewolves. All of those were around for like...a really long time.

...so you actually believe in that stuff? Most cops don't.

Yes, of course. Too many people have heard of them not to be real. And I've an aunt who actually saw a ghost with her own eyes; the ghost of my uncle. And when she saw him, he had a big gash cut out of the back of his jacket. What had happened was, he'd put on some weight before he passed, so his good suit didn't fit, and they had to cut it to get him in it. But no one had told her that. So that's proof right there.

I've seen ghosts before. No one I knew, though.

They were trapped in the house by a demon in the basement. I ended up chopping it up with the ghost version of the axe they were killed with.

I suspect I would want that as well.

[That gets a nod of approval. A respectable house is no place for demons. They go against God, and also are unlikely to chip in on rent.]

What's your name, lad?

Always pleased to meet another person from our good city.

Yeah.
