19centconstable | Case #49: Video

[George makes his way through a dark hallway, his comm held in front of him, filming and illuminating his face as he walks. The result isn't quite night vision, but it's similar. It is 2am, and George speaks gravely, but excitedly.]

My name is George Crabtree. I have always believed in ghosts, because my aunt once...well, it's a rather long story, involving my uncle and a jacket, and I will recount it some other time. I am currently aboard the...spaced station whose name I can not pronounce, which appears to have gone into some sort of lock down. Approximately one hour ago, I found myself plagued by a feeling of unease, and a series of unexplained voices, so I have set out on a quest in the hopes of capturing what I have heard on my communicator. I am joined only by my fellow Barge inhabitants who chose to disembark at this port, although I am not entire sure whom that is or where they might be. I can only hope that they do not creep up behind me in the dark, as that would be terribly startling. Nevertheless, I vow to spend the entire night traversing these highly active paranormal hallways. With any luck, I will capture some sort of irrefutable evidence of haunting, and in the process have a rollicking adventure. ...Perhaps, some kind of "ghost adventure"...

[George smiles at his own ingenuity, but a sound from off-screen causes him to freeze, and breathlessly ask:]

Ohmygoodness. What was that?

[George is wandering the station's hallways. Feel free to contact him via comm, or run into him in person and become part of his raw, extreme, Barge Adventures. TALKING LOUDLY.]

I do hope so. It would be rather horrible otherwise.

Imagine: being a ghost haunted by another ghost.

Perhaps it is that a man is haunted in death by those he wronged. [Dracula is a little sobered at the thought.]

Have you made a study of Kardec?

[George shakes his head.]

I'm afraid I haven't. What is it?

Allan Kardec, a Canadian actually, is one of the founders of Spiritism. He wrote several books on the subject of a Christian-oriented way in which to contact spirits and investigate their manifestations.

I'll certainly have to look into that. Have you made study of it, then?

There are copies of The Spirits Book and The Medium's Book in the Library. I read a great deal, you see. [He jumps slightly, eyebrows rising into his hairline.]

That was neither of us.

I will follow your lead, then. What should we do?

I dare say that they will be more interested in you than another dead person. We could attempt to communicate by asking them to, say, cause a light to turn on or off, or to make a certain number of taps on the wall to signify yes or no.

[George snaps his fingers.]

That is an excellent idea! ...What shall we ask them to say yes or no to?

One must come up with questions they can most easily answer. Are you a man? A woman? A child? Are there more than one of you? Like that.

I think it may be most useful to know if we are speaking with one spirit or many.

All right. You ask the questions and I will record any responses.

[George clears his throat.]

Oh, great spirits, or just one spirit, whom I am sure is also excellent, will you knock once if there is but one of you here?

[A nearby computer screen flashed on suddenly. Then the image started to jump.]

Eh? Oh. One...two...

[Dracula struggles to tell himself that this is normal and he should not scoop up the nice young policeman and fly for it.]

[The screen keeps jumping rapidly. It is either random...or there are a lot of ghosts.]

[George inches closer to Dracula.]

That is...a lot of spirits.

Enough to populate a space station, perhaps--ack! [He jumped again.]

They need to stop touching me.

It is rather rude of them.

I just hope it's a girl ghost. [He looks around in embarrassment.] What else should we ask them?

Why might that be?

I suppose...we ought to ask if they mean us harm, but I'm not sure I would like to know.

Because I swear it just pinched my bum! Again!

Hrmph. If they meant us harm they would not have allowed us to group up before attacking, I suspect.

That's very cheeky of them.

[George gives the air a disapproving look. ...Or did he just wink at it? So hard to say.]

I don't know. They might be looking to take out two birds with one stone. Although I've never understood what the good of that was: I can't imagine a situation where one would be short of stones...

That was incredibly cheeky of them. Now why can't human girls be like that?

[He shrugs. The screen jumps three times.] Tell them one jump for yes, two for no.

Because it would be terribly inappropriate.

[Serious face.]

To...what?

[Dracula just chuckles and shakes his head.]

To whether they...mean us harm, I suppose, is a start. I expect there will be two jumps.
