[George is in his room. He looks slightly dazed and has a damp washcloth pressed against his head. There is a bruise blooming underneath it.]

I'm afraid I was...indisposed.

[George shuffles his feet and there is the sound of broken glass crunching.]

But I've managed to find my trousers now. Has something happened?

That's horrible! Have you apprehended the perpetrator? [Bertie reads so many mysteries and pulp detective novels that, horrible as the circumstances are, there's a little tiny bit of him that's terribly pleased that, once in his life, he gets to say in all solemnity, "have you apprehended the perpetrator."]

I believe he has been. I'm afraid I've been out cold for several hours.

Oh dear. What size do you usually wear? I may have an oversized hat you can borrow for a while. [Being unable to wear a hat is a terrible thing. Any decent chap would loan a spare bit of head gear to help a fellow avoid the impropriety of going about with a bare head.]

Seven and one-eighth. But it may be fruitless. I may have to wear a bandage, and there would be no wearing anything over that.

Don't be so sure. I've got a size nine bowler here. One of Jeeves'. He's got an enormous brain, you know. It's from all the fish he eats. You would have to take excellent care with it, though.

[There's nothing Bertie can do about the dead person. Lack of hat, however, is the sort of emergency he's good at.]
