19centconstable | Case #50: Video [Warden Filter]

[George is in his room, in front of the large chalkboard he wheels out from time to time. Today he has scribbled what appear to be word problems on it. One reads: if 1(W) + 1(I) = helpful, then ?(W) = extra helpful?. Scribbled near that is: Ad = ?(I) 5?. There are also some pictures of some ghosts. Some of the ghosts are also pirates, because that seems appropriate. There is also a doodle of a dog preparing a roast ham. It's very life-like, but you can tell it isn't real because the dog hasn't eaten the roast. George begins:]

Fellow wardens: it has lately come to my attention that many of us are currently without inmates; that there are, in fact, more of us than there are of them. ...Although I don't like to think of things in terms of "us" and "them". At any rate: while one can view this as quite positive, and proof of the good works we're doing here, it does leave many of us sitting idle, which I don't believe is the Admiral's intention.

[George raises a finger.]

This has given me an idea. Now, I'm sure you all noticed our Admiral's recent apology, wherein he reported having been so overwhelmed that he did himself an injury. I think this is simply unacceptable. All of us are here to help others, and here, right in front of us, is a man clearly in need of help. Therefore, I propose that those of us who are unassigned turn our efforts towards the Admiral himself!

Now: who has got experience in driving large vessels?

Is there anyone here who might be honestly qualified to steer this thing?

Not that I wouldn't be in favor of more supervision for the Admiral...

I don't think they ought to do the actual steering, just give advice on the steering.

Does he even actually steer this thing? Or does it steer itself?

I've always wondered.

That's what the Doctor and I were discussing, actually! Unless the Admiral were forthcoming about it, I'm not sure how we might know.

But that's not to say there aren't other things he might need help with. A security detail, for one thing. [That time he got replaced by an imposter kind of sucked.]

Or simply a shoulder to cry on.

Right! Yes, exactly. [Really, she doesn't care about the Admiral except insofar as he is the one she made her bargain with.]

After all: without him, none of us would be here.

True enough, though some people here might consider that a better state of affairs.

How do you mean?

Well, in the eyes of many of the Inmates, he's some random person who pulled them here against their will, in some cases for reasons they don't know or fully understand.

I mean, who is he, really? What authority does he have? I didn't think about it when I made my deal, but I should have.

Not that it changes much in the here-and-now. We're all here, and he's the one running the show. I agree that it might be in our best interests to make sure he keeps running it as well as he can.

I'm not entirely sure it's he who does the pulling.

I'd always sort of assumed he worked for Jesus.

Jesus? [She kinda laughs, then realizes he... was probably being serious.] Oh. I see. But... don't you think he would've said so, if that was the case?

He might not want people to be intimidated.

I think he's pretty intimidating to some people all on his own. And... the Jesus connection might not be intimidating to many people here.

That's true. And I don't think Jesus would like us to think he was intimidating, either. I'd think he'd like us to consider him someone we could speak to about anything. Because he knows everything about us anyway.

So is he a buddy or a creepy stalker who knows way too much? [Sorry, George, she's just kinda skeptical of the whole religion thing.]

He's just like a good friend, who knows if you are sleeping, or awake, or bad, or good, and if you've been bad he sends your soul to an eternal fiery torment. I'd hardly call that "creepy".

...You and I must have verrrry different definitions of the word "creepy".

I do find groups of dwarves somewhat unsettling...

Clearly.

Mostly I just find people who watch me when I sleep creepy.
